The story of Wonderland begins long before the first Big Top was raised in Sarasota. It traces back over a century to the daring feats of the Wallenda family, who became legends in the circus world with their breathtaking high-wire performances. Founded by Karl Wallenda in the early 1900s, the “Great Wallendas” became famous for their gravity-defying seven-person pyramid and performances that pushed the limits of human courage and artistry. That legacy of resilience and showmanship was passed down through the generations and lives on today through Nik Wallenda.
Nik has carried the Wallenda name into the modern era, capturing the imagination of audiences around the world with his record-breaking wire walks. His feats include becoming the first person in history to cross directly over Niagara Falls, walking across the Grand Canyon on live television, and tackling daring challenges like Times Square and an active volcano. With 13 Guinness World Records and multiple television specials, Nik has not only honored his family’s tradition but has redefined it for a global audience.
Alongside Nik’s journey is the equally rich history of the Flying Vazquez family. Renowned for their spectacular trapeze acts, the Vazquez family carved out their own place in circus history with breathtaking aerial performances. From that lineage came Erendira Vazquez, who grew up mastering the trapeze and dazzling audiences worldwide. She would go on to make history herself, performing a suspended aerial routine from a helicopter above Niagara Falls, and ultimately marrying Nik—uniting two of the most iconic circus families in the world.
Together, Nik and Erendira dreamed of creating a new kind of circus experience—one rooted in legacy but built with deeper purpose. After years of performing around the globe, including Nik’s tenure as co-owner of the Big Apple Circus in New York City, they longed to bring something extraordinary home to Sarasota. Their vision was to create a holiday tradition that would not only entertain but also inspire and give back to the community.
That vision became Wonderland. In 2023, under a custom-built Big Top at University Town Center, Nik and Erendira opened their first season. What began as a dream has since grown into a beloved holiday tradition, now preparing for its third year. Wonderland brings together world-class performers, dazzling production, and heartfelt storytelling—while also opening its doors to thousands of underserved families, Title I school students, and first responders each season. More than a show, Wonderland is the realization of a lifelong vision: a place where courage, family, and wonder come together under one tent.
